MVRK SUNDAY BRUNCH : ONGDALSEM Direction & Visual Planning (with hyeminmonica)
The inaugural project of the Sunday Brunch Service hosted at MVRK HAUS, <ONGDALSEM>
Eating is generally something served and consumed. Yet if one recalls that every community began at a table, then the meal is not consumption but the earliest form through which relation occurs. ong·dal·saem redesigns the act of eating, turning a Sunday brunch into the experience of resting briefly in another kind of space.
The space is constructed as a walk. Food is not laid out in one place but dispersed along a path, and the participant, rather than being served, selects and gathers. Moving slowly from one round dish to the next — like crossing stepping stones in the spring sun — eating becomes active foraging rather than passive reception. Small strangenesses placed among familiar ingredients interrupt the pace, and music regulates it. A place that exists yet belongs nowhere — the third space indicated by the name ong·dal·saem, a small forest spring — opens in this way.
At the end of the path lies the spring itself. Each participant receives a pebble-shaped sheet of paper bearing a question written in advance. It asks for no correct answer; it is prepared so that one might pause and look inward for a moment. The act of gathering food into a bundle and the act of leaving one's thought as a sentence are laid along the same route. The completed pebbles are placed at the spring, later collected and scanned into an archive. Within this record, readable anonymously, participants come to read one another's reflections layered together without ever having met.
What ong·dal·saem designs is not a menu but a rite. Within a structure that collects and shares both food and thought, strangers exchange traces of one another without conversation. The fact that each was present remains upon a pebble and carries forward as record.
